I believe it is even superior to the 2007, which I had several weeks ago. The 2010 boasts a dense purple color along with a sumptuous bouquet of spring flowers, boysenberries, black cherries, black currants, nori (the sushi seaweed wrapper), black olives, licorice and pepper. This full-bodied, meaty, thick, juicy effort possesses a boatload of tannin, but it also has incredible concentration. More massive than I remember from last year, it has put on considerable weight and intensity. Forget it for 3-4 years, and drink it over the following 25-30 years. Kudos to Daniel and Frederic Brunier!

It is a brilliant effort. The wine exhibits fabulous texture, purity, and sweetness as well as a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. There is high tannin, remarkably rich, concentrated extract, and tell-tale Hermitage fruit characteristics (blackberries, cassis), minerals, and spice. This is the greatest vintage Chave has produced since 1990. While it requires 7-10 years of cellaring, it will last for 4-5 decades. This dense ruby/purple-colored, rich 2010 reveals kirsch and black currant fruit intermixed with notions of spice box, pepper and meat. Luscious and round, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years.

Stunning notes of crushed rocks, black raspberries, sweet cherries, licorice and a liqueur of granite-like character emerge from the aromatics and flavors of this full-bodied wine, which also has admirable purity, focus and freshness. This is a great example of what one of the most conscientious people is doing in St.-Joseph, an appellation clearly on the ascendency. This 2009 should drink well for 10-15 years. Don't be surprised to see Chave's St.-Joseph rival Guigal's Vin des l'Hospices or Chapoutier's Les Granits. Gorgeous
kirsch liqueur notes, raspberry jam, forest floor, spice box, new
saddle leather and a peppery spiciness are all present in this deep,
voluptuously textured, open-knit Clos des Papes, which is atypically
forward, luscious and approachable already. These wines often need a
good 5-10 years of cellaring in the more structured vintages, but the
2009 is gorgeous from the get-go. This full-bodied, deep, concentrated
wine has a deep purple color and should drink well for 20-25 years
without ever really closing down. Readers may want to think of this as a
slightly more concentrated version of the 2003, which is one of the
great stars of that vintage. Wine Advocate 95

This is one of the great estates
in Chateauneuf du Pape, with a history that dates back to the mid-1700s.
I believe the Avril family first estate-bottled wine in 1896. Clos des
Papes, with its 90+ acres of vines spread among 24 separate parcels in
the appellation, is one of the traditional hallmarks of classic,
long-lived Chateauneuf du Pape. Everything is aged in old wood foudres,
no old vine or luxury cuvee is produced, and the red wine is a classic
blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah, and the rest Vaccarese,
Counoise, and Muscardin. It is generally not fined or filtered after
aging 15 months in these old wood foudres. The white wine is an
equal-part blend of Grenache blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Picpoul,
Bourboulenc, and one could argue that it might possibly be the
longest-lived dry white of the appellation. Tasting here is always a
treat, but it takes a while to work through all the different lots and
then look at the potential assembled version of the 2010. I was
consistently rating each foudre between a low of 92 or 93 to a high of
mid- to upper-90s. That is as impressive as 2010 is. Avril told me that
the average alcohol in 2010 was high on all the different lots, which is
in keeping with recent vintages. (The 2003 was 15.6%, and the 2007 was
15.7%, while the final assembled version of the 2010 is 15.9% and the
2009 is 15.6%.) The 2010, paradoxically, has relatively high acidity
compared to other top vintages. Since I had a few extra moments, Vincent
opened a 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape blanc, which I rated 93. I thought it
was still very fresh and lively. Of course, he ended our tasting with
one of the all-time classics of Chateauneuf du Pape and of Clos des
Papes, the 1990, which is close to perfection

2000 Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee - $79.99

Robert Parker's

The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee may be one of the few 2000s that is better than its 1998 counterpart. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, cedar, licorice, and pepper. It smells like an open-air Provencal market. Sweet, fat, opulent, and voluptuous, with fabulous fruit concentration, sweet tannin, and a long, 45+ second finish, this powerful, deep, seamless 2000 is impeccably well-balanced. A tour de force in traditional Chateauneuf du Pape, it is accessible now, but should age easily for 15-20 years. This is one of the benchmarks for traditionally-made Chateauneuf du Pape. Paul Feraud, a classmate of Henri Bonneau, is still involved in the running of this estate, but he has given more and more responsibility to his charming, talented daughter, Laurence. Readers looking for uncompromising Chateauneuf du Pape that can age for two decades need look no further than Pegau. Their primary vineyard plots are well-placed lieux-dits called Monpertuis, Rayas, and La Crau, the latter being the parcel from which the bulk of Pegau's wine emerges. 95 points

It is one of the few 2004s that can compete with the dozen or so monumental wines produced in Chateauneuf du Pape in 2003. This wine is dense ruby/purple to the rim, has a stunning nose of blackberry, crushed roasted Provencal herbs, and rich aged beef-like smells. The wine is sweet from glycerin and richness rather than any residual sugar as it is totally dry. It has fabulous texture, great purity, and stunning complexity and length. One of the ancient families of Chateauneuf du Pape, the Boirons trace their origins and winemaking back to the mid-1800s. Lovely sweet notes of glove leather, roasted meats, spice box, ground pepper, kirsch, and raspberries are present in this deep, full-bodied 2006. The strikingly intense powdered stone/granite minerality is apparent in this wine of great intensity, prodigious, almost skyscraper-like texture, massive body and high tannins. It is only for true connoisseurs who have a cold cellar as well as the patience to wait a minimum of a decade for it to round into drinking form. A wine of great intensity, it possesses an inky/purple color, plenty of creme de cassis, licorice, lead pencil shavings, camphor, flint and barbecue smoke characteristics, and a thickness and viscosity that eclipse that of the 2009. Full-bodied and powerful with sweet tannins, a striking floral/mineral component in the mid-palate, and a huge, massive finish, this brilliant Hermitage should be consumed between 2018-2035. Combe des Fous. As I wrote last year, this is one of the most complex
and concentrated wines of the vintage. An extraordinary perfume of white
chocolate, roasted Provencal herbs, lavender, licorice, black cherries
and sweet black currants is followed by a broad, expansively flavored
wine with a superb full-bodied texture, terrific purity and a 40+ second

be beneficial. This 2008 should evolve for 15 years. It is almost
impossible to believe that something like this could have been achieved
in this vintage. The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah aged 100% in tank prior to being bottled. This wine always comes from the three best parcels of the estate â€" Les Serres, La Crau, and Guignasse. This hugely concentrated, muscular wine is very powerful, excruciatingly tannic at present, but super-rich. Yields were a low 22 hectoliters per hectare because of the drought, and this blockbuster, muscular, virile style of wine needs at least 5-6 years of bottle age and should keep for two-plus decades. It is certainly a terrific Mon Aieul, but for those who are very patient. This estate has been on an outrageous run of successful vintages ever since 1998, no small thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the two brothers, Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio. For them 2005 is a very structured, concentrated, powerful vintage that will require significant cellaring. 94 points

Since 1996, their Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois has been one of the stars of the vintage. The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois boasts a dense purple color, a full-bodied, opulent style, moderately high tannin, sensational concentration, and abundant aromas and flavors of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, and spice. It is a meaty, fleshy, tannic effort that brings to mind the 1998. A brilliant wine for the vintage, it should be exceptionally long lived. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Christophe Delorme and his brother run this estate, which is clearly at the top of its game.... 95 points

A brilliant wine, and again there will be two cuvees, Christophe Delorme's 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois has a wonderful, gorgeous black/purple color and a beautifully sweet nose of blackberries, scorched earth, graphite, tobacco leaf, and Provencal herbs and spice. Inky, pure, full-bodied, and tannic with good acidity, this wine is going to require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+. Parker 94-96 Sadly, the tiny yields of Mordoree's vineyards only produced 1,250 cases of the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois. (By the way, this is a wine in which 40% passes in small barrels, and 60% is aged in tank, and then the two components are blended together prior to bottling.)

This is an estate that was a no-brainer for inclusion in my recent book on the world's greatest wine estates. With 135 acres spread throughout some of the most impressive appellations of the southern Rhone, Christophe Delorme and his brother took over this estate in the early to mid-1990s and have done nothing but produce one exquisite wine after another. Of course, the top cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape are rare and expensive, but this is a place to find terrific Cotes du Rhones and Liracs as well. Delorme is equally adept at dry whites as well as reds, and turns out some stunning roses both under the Cotes du Rhone and Tavel appellations. Visitors to the area will be surprised to find out that Mordoree is actually in Lirac, not Chateauneuf du Pape.

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin (an old vine Grenache offering) is concentrated and tightly knit displaying good acidity, firm tannin, rich, full-bodied power, and stunning concentration as well as length. Unlike such vintages as 2003, 2001, 2000, and 1998, the 2004 requires 3-5 years of bottle age; it should keep for 15+.
With twenty vintages under his belt, Michel Chapoutier and his impressive winemaking staff go from strength to strength. These are among the world's greatest wines, especially the single vineyard wines, many of which will last 50 or more years. The 2006 reds from Chapoutier display good acidity and freshness. If they lack the powerful tannic structures of the 2005s, and perhaps some of that vintage's density, they are certainly not light wines. It is a vintage of finesse and concentration, but with considerable up-front charm. Again, 1991 is a useful historic reference. They are the perfect foil for those buying 2005s, which will require deferred gratification. The single-vineyard, or as Chapoutier calls them, the “Selections Parcellaires” wines, are all aged in small barrels, often 100% new oak, and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Production is relatively small, with the tiniest cuvee, the Crozes-Hermitage Les Varonnieres usually 200-325 cases, and the rest of the single-vineyard wines averaging around 480-625 cases. The largest is usually the St.-Joseph Les Granits or the Ermitage Le Pavillon, which can be as high as 1,000 or so cases in an abundant vintage. Again, the 2005s all exhibit the vintage's density, tannic structure, and long-term aging potential. At the same time, the 2006s at Chapoutier remind me of 1991, initially an underrated vintage of wines with ideal balance. If they lack the pure power and structure of 2005, they are well-served by their purity and equilibrium. There are four single-vineyard cuvees of Ermitage. Production is small, running from about 275-300 cases of Les Greffieux, 480-500 of Le Meal, 800-1,100 for Le Pavillon, and 200-600 for L'Ermite

2009 Usseglio Chateauneuf Cuvee Mon Aieul - $89.99

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul 100% Grenache aged in tank (50%), pyramid-shaped, truncated wood cuves (40%) and barrels (10%) will not make anyone forget the 2007. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases in 2009. Already seductive and more evolved than the 2000, 2005 and 2006 were at a similar age, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2009 reveals a sweet bouquet of blueberries, black raspberries, nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), grilled meats, roasted herbs and spice. Medium to full-bodied with a plump, voluptuous texture, superb purity and silky tannins it should be one of the few Mon Aieuls that will be irresistible upon release. It will evolve for 12-15+ years. The wine is full-bodied, rich, intense and powerful. Moreover, there is a lot more of the 2009 than there is of the 2008 (after the strict selection, only 50% of the normal production was achieved). Two brilliant successes are Brunel's cuvees of 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. The 2007 Les Cailloux Tradition (a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah, and 3% other authorized varieties) comes from 60-year-old vines and is aged completely in tank except for the Mourvedre and Syrah components, which are kept in small barrels. Explosively fruity, this dense plum/purple-colored wine displays grilled meat notes intermixed with Provencal herbs, spice box, black cherry and black currant, in addition to having a lush, opulent texture. The finish goes on and on, and the wine is beautifully pure. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12 or more years. 93 points

This elegant vintage also revealed surprising ripeness, power, and richness because of the severe crop-thinning as well as the strict triage in the cellar. Displaying a personality similar to the 1999, but even richer, it may turn out to be the finest Northern Rhone I tasted. A brilliant wine boasting superb ripeness, loads of licorice-infused creme de cassis, and hints of rocks as well as flowers, this powerful, rich beauty should be cellared for 5-6 years, and drunk over the following two decades. Rhone Valley estate that had improved the most in the shortest period of
time, it would undoubtedly go to that of Pascal and Vincent Maurel, who
took over Clos Saint-Jean after their father passed away in 2002. Since
then, they have made a succession of world-class wines that are out of
this world. One of the largest estates in Chateauneuf du Pape, Clos
Saint-Jean has an amazing number of old vine parcels in its 112+ acres
(significant holdings in La Crau, in the eastern part of the
appellation). No doubt the hiring of renowned oenologist Philippe Cambie
has also increased the quality of these offerings. The 2010 Clos
Saint-Jean Chateauneuf du Papes are phenomenal wines. The Maurel
brothers believe they are as profound as the 2007s, and it is hard to
disagree. Production is down considerably because of the loss of 25-30%
of the Grenache crop due to poor flowering, but the levels of
concentration, freshness and focus of these wines are remarkable.
Moreover, the 2009s from bottle performed at the upper end of the ranges
I had given them last year â€" always a sign of a terrific winery
