I have the same inexplicable trouble with the Chateau des Jacques 2009 Morgon Cote de Py – from that obviously justly-renowned schist, basalt, and granite sector of its appellation – that I had with its 2008 predecessor: it simply cannot – for now at least – get out from under its oak. Resin, coconut, caramel, and lanolin dominate over the sweetly ripe black and red berry tones in the nose as well as on the palate. Thankfully, there is more than enough energy here, so that the wine’s almost thick richness does not become tiresome.I also liked the salt, bitterness of fruit pit, along with the cut of fruit skin which adds a decisive counterpoint to a memorably long finish. But the oak elements – including a grainy tanninity – follow them every inch of its long way. Certainly this will be worth following for 6 or more years, but it needs to surmount its wood. WA 88-89+
