In contrast to the expressiveness of the first two '05s, here there is a completely different aromatic profile and one that is brooding with more deeply pitched and quite ripe blue and violet aromas combining with pungent earth and game hints that continue onto the sweet, rich and sappy flavors wrapped around a firm tannic spine. This is impressive as it is clearly Nuits in character yet with refined and sophisticated structural elements. Also recommended. 92

The Clos de la Maréchale is also outstanding in 2005, as it very nicely avoids any
signs of the slight overripeness that can be found in some examples of Nuits in this
vintage. The ’05 Clos de la Maréchale offers up a complex and classic Nuits nose of red
cherries, strawberries, orange zest, woodsmoke, excellent minerality, a touch of the
gamebirds to come, coffee and just the faintest whiff of spicy wood. On the palate the
wine is full-bodied, pure and transparent, with a lovely austerity that is almost a relief
after all the opulent 2005s, a sappy core of red fruit, beautiful focus, and excellent length
and grip on the tangy, ripely tannic finish. One does not expect young Nuits in a great
vintage to offer a lot of early generosity, and the ’05 Clos de la Maréchale is beautifully
balanced on its structural elements, but it will not take too many years of bottle age for
this wine to really begin to sing. A Nuits St. Georges with a Chambolle’s heart in 2005.
