Fantastic aromas of blackberries, coffee and toasted oak. Full-bodied, with wonderfully silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Wonderful balance. This is the best ever from the estate and from the owner, Vittorio Fiore, a legendary winemaker in the region. Best after 2005. 94 points.

Vittorio Fiore virtually invented the profession of consulting oenologist in Tuscany in the mid-1970s, but he has also been producing his own wines at Poggio Scalette in Greve in Chianti since the late 1980s. Jurij Fiore is now on board to give him a hand, and the 2001 Carbonaione from this father-son team is simply outstanding, bursting with ripe and luscious berry fruit and chocolate, a dense and weighty texture, and much softness and complexity as well with its full range of spices, herbs, and minerals on the expanding, mouth-filling finish. Power and poise to the highest degree, and a wine which will still be drinking well in 2020. 94 points.
